How to Replace Your Old Mattress with the Right New One

More and more studies are showing how important a quality night’s sleep is during our lives for physical and mental wellbeing and longevity. If you’re not getting at least seven good hours of sleep most nights, you’re putting yourself at higher risk of developing health issues.

If you struggle to sleep well, a big part of the reason may be that you don’t have the right mattress. Perhaps you haven’t upgraded this product for more than a decade or are attempting to rest on a product that doesn’t suit your body type or sleeping position. If so, there’s no time like the present to start shopping for a replacement.

1. Work Out Your Budget

With so many different mattresses on the market, it can be overwhelming to evaluate them all. Plus, when comparing all the products, it can be tempting to go way over your preferred spending amount when you have salespeople selling you on options or great deals popping up.

It’s wise, then, to work out your budget well before you begin shopping. Determine what you can afford and feel comfortable outlaying on a mattress, then only look at items that fall within the top end of your range.

Keep in mind, though, that mattresses last a decade or so, and we spend around a third of our lives on them. As such, they’re investment pieces worth putting more money into than many other household items.

2. Think About Material Type

As you start to examine mattresses for sale, pay attention to different material types, as this can make a big difference to how the products feel when you sleep on them and affect other factors. Get clear on what works for you personally when it comes to things like longevity, temperature, chemical usage, the potential for allergen accumulation, etc.

For example, a more natural, sustainable mattress made with fewer chemicals will be better for your body, environment, and the planet. Some mattresses, such as latex and memory foam, tend to increase body temperature as you sleep because you sink into them, and the materials hold body heat. This situation isn’t great for shoppers who notice the heat a lot or live in tropical areas.

If you’re asthmatic or have other allergic reactions, you should also look for a mattress that’s resistant to mold, dust mites, etc., such as an organic cotton product.

3. Decide How Firm You Want Your Mattress to Be

Another consideration when buying a new mattress is firmness. We’re all a bit like Goldilocks in this area, needing to find a bed that’s “just right” for us. Some people like and need very firm mattresses to support their back and reduce related pain, while others can’t sleep unless they’re on a soft bed that cocoons them and allows them to sleep on their side. Others are somewhere on the spectrum in between.

Test a variety of products to work out what seems right for your body shape, size, and ailments, and the way you sleep. If you prefer a firmer base, you might like a memory-foam or latex mattress with less spring. If you prefer a soft, bouncy feel, an innerspring mattress might be the right choice for you. Remember that you can add a soft, plush mattress topper to the bed if you want to later on, too.

4. Consider the Way You Sleep

When shopping for a replacement mattress, keep your sleeping style front of mind. Side sleepers typically need a soft foam or latex mattress or an innerspring option. They require a bed that provides pressure relief around the shoulders and hips, as these are the body parts taking most of the weight as they lay.

If you’re a stomach sleeper, avoid memory foam as you’ll sink into this too much and might find it feels suffocating. A firmer bed is generally more appropriate, so stick with firm innerspring options or dense foam mattresses.

On the other hand, back sleepers need a mix of support. You want to keep your spine in alignment when laying on your back, so it depends on what works for you. Most mattress types can be suitable, but you need to test them to find the best solution.

5. Read Reviews

To help you with your shopping, check out customer reviews and testimonials about the mattresses on your shortlist. Take comments with a grain of salt since you’ll never find a product with zero bad reviews, but reading over what users have to say about how well mattresses hold up to wear over the years and other factors can give you guidance.

Take your time buying a new mattress, as this is something you’ll have for many years to come. Ask salespeople or customer service reps any questions you need to make your decision, and spend plenty of time testing products before you part with money.
