Bullet journaling is a trend that has grown more and more popular with each passing year. It’s not hard to see why: it’s essentially a planner that you customize for yourself. This means you can leave out any things you don’t use, and add in any extras you might not find in a normal planner, such as a habit tracker, or a list of goals. You can use it to plan certain events, such as a wedding or road trip. The options are limitless!
That being said, it can be quite intimidating to get into, especially once you see everyone’s fancy spreads and think to yourself, “I could never do that!”. Well, we have good news for you: you can!
Make it your own
A lot of people use bullet journals for the aesthetic of it. They spend hours and hours creating complicated spreads. If that’s what you want from your journal, go for it! If not, that’s okay too. Your bullet journal is yours – it doesn’t have to look like everyone else’s. Perhaps you want your journal to be pleasing to look at, but you don’t have any artistic abilities. Fear not; you still have plenty of options. For example, you can use things like printable templates or washi tape to make your pages look beautiful.
If you like changing things up every so often, joining a sticker club is a great way to make your pages pop with color without having to draw until your hand falls off.
Hand lettering
Hand lettering is a great way to fill any empty space and also make sure that your headings are eye-catching so that you always know what’s happening. The words “hand lettering” may make you shudder and think of calligraphy, and while the two are similar, there are a few major differences, such as the fact that hand lettering is easier and more fun than calligraphy! There are also a whole bunch of different hand lettering styles for you to try out.
Don’t be afraid of making mistakes!
No one’s bullet journal is ever perfect, trust us. You may measure your space wrong, or draw a line that doesn’t look right. Other times, you may have a spread that you simply don’t like, or that doesn’t work for your schedule. And that’s okay! Planning is important, and if you’re using your bullet journal primarily as a planner, all that it needs to be is functional. Having it look pretty is a bonus.
Use the internet for help
You may be wondering what to put in a bullet journal, how to set up certain spreads, or how to come up with themes. If you’re new to bullet journaling, use other people for inspiration! Just be sure to credit them if you ever post your spreads. There are loads of bullet journaling pages on Instagram and Pinterest, and there are even YouTubers who take you through a tutorial of how they set their journals up.
