You’ve probably heard people say something like, college was the best time of my life! But there are also plenty of cautionary tales of people who struggled through their time on campus and finished with more regrets than positive memories. Read on to find out how to ensure your experience is more good than bad.
Maximize Your College Experience With These 6 Tips
The best part about college is that it allows you to reinvent yourself. The person you’ve been pretending to be can be discarded, and you can step into your true identity in a place that’s all about new beginnings.
Keeping this in mind, here are some tips to maximize your college years:
1. Keep Your Dorm Room Open
Dorm life can be cramped, messy, and uncomfortable at times. But it’s also one of the most unique experiences of your life. Never again will you live in a place where everyone is living the same shared experience together. You’re all the same age, attending the same university, and reaching for the same basic goal (a college diploma). This has a way of creating strong bonds that last a lifetime.
One suggestion is to keep your dorm room open whenever you’re home (and not studying or sleeping). This gives others an open invitation to come in. It’s a great way to meet friends and enjoy spontaneous experiences with people you might not have met otherwise.
2. Say Yes to Everything (At First)
As you get older, you’ll learn the power of saying no. In fact, much of your career success and personal happiness will eventually hang on your ability to say no to things that don’t matter. But during your first several months of college, it’s smart to say yes to (almost) everything.
Assuming it’s legal and doesn’t go against your own morals, say yes. Whether it’s attending an event, joining a new club, or going out with friends on a Monday night, saying yes will help you make friends and explore new opportunities. As your college experience progresses, you can then start to say no to more things and zero in on the relationships and opportunities that bring you the most joy.
3. Get to Know Your Professors
Your professors are incredibly talented and wise. They didn’t stumble into their positions – they earned their way. And as a student, you have the unique ability to tap into their collective experience.
Most students will never take a professor up on their study hours. But if you make an effort to do so, you’ll find that most of them are willing to help in any way they can. Not only will you do better in the class, but you never know when a professor could help you land a job after graduation.
4. Stay Away From Debt
Most students leave college straddled with debt. And though it may be normal, it’s not wise. Do everything you can to stay away from debt during your college years. This includes student loans!
While graduating from college totally debt-free might not be an option, you can chip away at the cost by applying for aid, grants, scholarships, and other forms of assistance prior to each semester. Even if it’s something like a $1,000 scholarship for your major, every little bit counts.
5. Get an Internship
Internships can feel futile – particularly when you could spend that time working a paying job – but the experience and connections they create are invaluable in the long run. Apply for scholarships related to your major and try something different each semester. This will help you find out what you’re truly interested in doing with your career before you actually graduate and enter the workforce.
6. Tap Into Available Resources
Colleges and universities have so many resources available to students – don’t miss them! Whether it’s a gym membership, access to health care services, study tutors, or internship placement programs, these resources exist to serve you. Don’t miss out on them!
Enjoy College Life to the Fullest
