The ocean is a wonderful place for many reasons. For one, it’s the largest body of water on Earth and has over 90% of all the water on our planet! It also provides some really fun activities like swimming, surfing, diving and more.
In a state like Michigan that has the longest freshwater coastline in the US, residents, and tourists are sure to have an exciting time. Whether you plan to spend a few days by the sea or live by it permanently, there’s always something fun to do. Here are seven ways to make your time by the sea even better!
1. Organize a Scavenger Hunt
A scavenger hunt is a great way to get kids interested in the area they’re exploring. It’s one of the fun things you get to do on Michigan beaches. All you need to do is give each person in your group a piece of paper with several items that they have to search for.
To make things more exciting, have each person only use their mouths to pick the items up with. No hands! This helps them learn how to identify objects without relying on their vision and makes for an even better adventure. After you find enough items, you can go back to the starting point and see who found the most. Be creative and make it fun.
2. Throw a Beach Barbecue
For a great day by the sea, it’s important to have a delicious meal. Why not throw a barbecue? Before you start cooking, make sure you have everything you need:
- Cutting boards and knives for prepping food;
- Tongs and spoons for flipping burgers/hot dogs/etc.;
- A couple of large pots for boiling corn and potatoes;
- A few skewers for shish kebabs;
- Several coolers filled with water, juice boxes, sodas, and beers.
Having everything this way will make it easy to cook, play, and stay refreshed under the sun. Plus, it’s fun! Everyone will enjoy themselves as they eat delicious barbecue food and watch you work your magic in the kitchen. If you run out of supplies or don’t have enough people to finish all the food, no worries – there are tons of seafood places nearby that will be happy to help.
3. Spend The Night Under The Stars
Camping out on the beach for a night is an experience you won’t forget. If you’re not sure whether or not it’s legal, look online to see what others have done – there are tons of great examples. As long as your tent isn’t too big, and you’re not blocking the road, people should be fine with your plans.
When pitching a tent on a beach, make sure it’s sturdy and won’t collapse if there’s a strong wind. If possible, choose a spot away from where people might walk around so you have more privacy. Just hanging out under the stars is already awesome, but if you want an even more memorable experience, consider bringing along a guitar or other instrument. You can’t go wrong with sing-a-longs!
4. Go On An Adventure At Low Tide
Some beaches have tide pools where the sea recedes for a time and leaves behind all sorts of plants and animals that are normally out of sight. To locate a tide pool, look for a flat area of land near the water that’s surrounded by rocks. When you find one, follow the wet sand as it leads to the sea and waits until the waves start to calm down.
Once the water starts to recede, start exploring! Make sure you’re careful around any animals within the tide pool. Even though most are harmless, it’s still good to be aware of your surroundings.
5. Enjoy An Unforgettable Sunrise or Sunset
Whether it’s at the beginning of the day or towards its end, watching a sunset has never felt better. The combination of warm colors and calming scenery makes for a great display. When it comes to enjoying a sunset, all you need is your eyes and some comfortable seating (some people like bringing beach chairs).
There’s no wrong way to watch the sun sink into the horizon, so just sit back and enjoy yourself.
6. Build a Raft
In the shallow waters near the shoreline, you can use your supplies to make a raft! You can sit or stand on it as you float in the ocean. Be careful though – only go out past where your waist is submerged, or else you could be swept away by the waves. Make sure to have a few people on your raft at all times so no one gets left behind.
7. Play Volleyball
Volleyball is a great way to get some exercise while hanging out with friends and family. If you’re not sure where you can play, check with the local fire department or parks and rec department. They might have volleyball nets available for use on the beach.
To make things easier when it comes time for serving, try using a piece of clothing like a scarf or towel as the ball. Just tie it to one end of the net, and you’ll be good to go!
There are plenty of options to choose from if you want to spend time by the sea. The activities listed here are sure to get the ball rolling during your time out.
