As the COVID numbers across Canada slowly start to drop, there is a feeling that we may have normal lives again some time in the new future. That means we may have to (gasp) go out in public or go back to the office some day soon.
Do you feel ready?
The pandemic has been rough on all of us, as haircuts were rare and gyms were closed. However, don’t be surprised if you see someone for the first time in 16 months, and they somehow look younger or better than ever.
The COVID-19 lockdown actually created a mini-boom for plastic surgery in Toronto and all of Canada. Here’s why.
1. The Zoom Effect
The odds are very good that you were sent home to work for the last year or so. You have probably been on video calls every day since. And by now, you almost certainly hate them.
Everyone hates these calls. More specifically, everyone hates how they look on these calls. It’s nearly impossible not to stare at your own face and pick out what you don’t like about it. This has had a very real impact on the plastic surgery industry and it has been dubbed The Zoom Effect or The Zoom Boom.
In fact, a recent survey of North American plastic surgeons revealed that 70% of them reported an increase in business during the lockdown, and over 80% of those respondents attributed the spike to The Zoom Effect.
2. Recover From Home
Your office may be closed, but most plastic surgery clinics have remained open. This means that you could easily get a facial surgery and then recover discreetly from home while continuing to work from home.
This means that there is no need to use up all your vacation days while you recover from surgery. You can simply turn off your webcam for a week or two and save your vacation days for an actual vacation.
Of course, we’re all still wearing masks in public places, so you can also easily blend in while you’re out and about.
3. The Quarantine 15
While most patients are getting procedures on facial or webcam-facing parts of their body, some are also taking this opportunity to get things like a liposuction procedure or a tummy tuck.
Roughly 60% of surveyed Canadians said they had an undesired weight change during the pandemic lockdown, with over 40% saying they gained weight. The problem is so widespread that it has been dubbed The Quarantine 15.
It’s a playful name, but the people who are going through it don’t find it funny. They are getting body contouring procedures to get their pre-pandemic bodies back.
So if you’re not looking your best these days, don’t beat yourself up. You’re not alone. And if you decide to get a surgical procedure to help address things, you most certainly won’t be the only one you know that does so.
