Proper sleep is crucial to one’s functionality in the waking world. So, if your sleep habits leave a lot to be desired, there’s a good chance your job performance and personal relationships have suffered as a result. When it comes to fixing this problem, stepping up your sleep quality can do you a world of good.
If you’ve grown accustomed to poor sleeping habits, this is liable to seem like a tall order. Luckily, enhancing the quality of your nightly respite is much easier than you may think.
1. Invest in a Good Mattress
Your mattress is the most important tool in your nighttime wheelhouse. In fact, your choice of mattress stands to make or break the quality of your nightly respite. With this in mind, it’s imperative that you put genuine thought into your next mattress purchase and avoid limiting yourself to the cheapest possible options. This isn’t to say that inexpensive mattresses are invariably bad, but as is the case with other types of products, the odds are in favor of you getting what you pay for.
If your current mattress is worn-down or just plain uncomfortable, now would be a good time to start perusing potential replacements. When shopping around for the right mattress, look for something that offers immense comfort and is likely to last for a good long while. Incidentally, a good latex mattress can deliver on both of these fronts.
2. Go to Bed at a Set Time
One of the reasons many of us have trouble falling asleep is a lack of consistency regarding when we call it a day. Instead of set bedtimes, a fair number of adults have windows in which they go to bed. However, when these windows get too wide, getting tired enough to fall asleep at a decent hour can be an uphill battle.
If this describes your approach to hitting the hay, you may benefit from giving yourself a set bedtime. Although many of us associate bedtimes with childhood, it can’t be denied that they served an important purpose – ensuring that we were well-rested for the day ahead. (Incidentally, apologies to our parents may be in order.)
So, after choosing a bedtime that allows for at least seven to eight hours of sleep, make a point of adhering to it. Those of us who are used to falling asleep at inconsistent times may go through an adjustment phase ranging from several days to several weeks, but if you stick with this system, your quality of slumber is liable to improve exponentially.
3. Relax Your Mind in the Leadup to Bedtime
It’s easy to see why many people are too wired to fall asleep at a decent hour. For one thing, the various screens we spend our days staring at can overstimulate our minds, leaving our brains racing a mile a minute when we’re supposed to be winding down.
That being the case, make a point of shutting off your television, phone and any other screen-based devices 30 minutes to one hour before going to bed. Use this time to engage in relaxing activities, like reading, journaling and meditation. This will help clear your mind and leave your brain in the ideal state for slumber.
For good measure, try to avoid turning to your screens if you wake up in the middle of the night. The temptation to grab your phone and start scrolling through your social media feeds may be strong, but doing so will ultimately make it harder for you to get back to sleep.
4. Minimize Light
Some people sleep best in total darkness. However, if you live in an area with lots of traffic, billboards or other sources of outside light, making your sleeping space pitch-black may prove difficult. Blackout curtains are designed to keep outside light to the barest of minimums and can be a boon to those of us who are unable to sleep comfortably with light seeping in.
One cannot overstate the benefits of proper sleep habits. In addition to helping us replenish energy, sleep enables our brains to process and consolidate information and purge assorted toxins. So, not only is sleep essential to one’s psychological well-being, it’s crucial to physical health, as well. As such, anyone suffering from diminished sleep quality should start taking measures to improve their overnight comfort.
