5 Layering Tips for Winter Clothing

When the weather is frosty and cold, you’ll need to wear multiple layers of clothing to stay warm. With lots of warm clothes, you can avoid feeling chilled or developing frostbite and enjoy your time outside during winter.

Layering makes it easy to regulate your body temperature when you’re moving between indoors and outdoors. You can add or remove layers of clothing depending on the external temperature.

Below, we’ve covered five top layering tips for your winter outfits.

1. Start with a Comfortable Base Layer

Every layered outfit starts with a base layer, which is the layer that you put on first. It provides a foundation for the rest of your outfit and an extra layer of insulation to keep you warm on frosty days.

Choose a moisture-wicking base layer that will keep your skin dry and remove sweat as you go about your day. Choose a base layer that is made from high-quality materials, such as synthetic cotton blends or wool. Great clothes for base layers include a high-neck tank top, vest, or long-sleeved cotton shirt.

2. Add an Insulating Layer

Next, you need to consider your insulating layer, which will sit on top of your base layer and provide lots of warmth when you’re in colder temperatures.

For your insulating layer, opt for clothing made from warm materials that are thick and comfortable. For your insulating layer, you’ll want clothes like fleeces, woolly jumpers, and thick cardigans.

3. Consider Your Outermost Layer of Clothing

You can add an extra insulating layer if you wish but otherwise, your next layer is your outermost layer. For this, think about things like teddy coats, waterproof jackets, and hooded coats, all of which offer warmth, weather resistance, and protection from chilly winds.

Make sure whatever outermost layer you wear is appropriate for the weather. For example, if you’re going out in the rain, choose a jacket that is rainproof and will protect your inner layers from getting wet.

4. Accessorize to Stay Warm

You can use accessories to elevate your style and stay warm at the same time. Winter accessories include gloves, hats, and scarves. These accessories add color and texture to your outfit but also keep your head, neck, and extremities warm.

You can also accessorize with funky socks that are made from warm, woolly materials. Socks add an extra layer of insulation to your feet, which are prone to losing heat and getting chilled in the cold winter months. They can also enhance your outfit if they are colorful or patterned.

5. Consider Wearing More Than One Layer on Your Legs

Insulating your legs is a great way to maximize heat retention and warmth when you’re outside in extremely cold weather. You can wear a layer of tights or leggings underneath your trousers or choose thermal leggings that offer comfort, style, and insulation to make your winter more enjoyable.

You could also get a pair of waterproof trousers to wear when it’s raining or snowing and prevent your legs from getting cold and wet.
