How to Avoid Breakouts When You Wear Makeup

Makeup is an excellent way to enhance your self-expression, creativity, and beauty. You could even call it an art form; plus, it helps us feel more comfortable in our skin from day to day.

There are many benefits to wearing makeup, but it can be harsh on your skin if you wear a variety of products every day. If you enjoy wearing cosmetics, you may notice periods when your favorite products will make your skin break out.

Cosmetics can clog pores and play a negative factor in your skin’s health. This is especially true if you wear items that cover most of your face, like foundation.

Many of us hope to find ways to wear makeup without having to deal with breakouts. Here are some tips to help lessen the impact of makeup use on your skin.

What If Makeup Causes Rashes or Other Issues?

Although breakouts and other skincare issues might result from makeup use, you should pay attention to your skin if anything seems wrong. If you notice a rash or allergic reaction, you should stop using the product and contact a dermatologist.

You should definitely stop using makeup or a skincare product if it causes any pain.

Six Ways To Prevent Breakouts When You Wear Makeup

When you wear makeup, you may follow these six tips to keep your skin healthy, and prevent acne and other skincare imbalances:

  • Try changing products: Did you know that certain makeup products are less likely to cause clogged pores? Clogged pores are a cause of acne in certain individuals. You should watch for products such as non-comedogenic foundations that may make a difference.
  • Don’t sleep in your makeup: One of the worst things to do when you wear makeup is to leave it on when you go to bed. Sleeping with makeup on will likely clog your pores and lead to breakouts. Before going to bed, remove all makeup from your face and neck.
  • Use acne spot treatments or other products: If you go to a drugstore, you’ll see lots of products labeled as “acne fighting.” But not all of them work. Look for items that contain simple and basic ingredients such as salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide. If you have questions, consult a dermatologist.
  • Replace applicators regularly: Another way to prevent acne is to remove bacteria from the skin. Makeup brushes and applicators quickly become dirty and carry bacteria. Take the time to wash them about once a week; you can even use rubbing alcohol. It’s wise to rotate them out every few months, as well.
  • Don’t apply makeup with your fingers: Although you should be careful not to use dirty brushes and applicators, those would still be preferable to your hands and fingers. You might have excess oil or bacteria on your hands. Also, before you put on cosmetics, make sure you wash your hands thoroughly.
  • Try different kinds of foundations: Though liquid foundations are better for complete coverage and hiding imperfections, they are typically oily. They may cause acne. A good alternative is to try powder foundation instead.
  • Take a break occasionally: If you wear makeup daily, it’s a smart idea to let your skin breathe sometimes. Try going without makeup on the weekends or any other time you don’t require it.

The above six tips can reduce the likelihood of acne and breakouts caused by wearing makeup. But remember, some people are more prone to acne problems than others. If you need more intensive acne care, a qualified and experienced physician is your best bet.
