4 Tips for a Deep Clean of Your House

Most of us are pretty good at “spot” cleaning our homes. And while we can quickly address obvious messes, we rarely (if ever) take care of the real messes that are hidden in carpets, cabinets, and crevices. What your house really needs is a “deep” clean.

The Major Benefits of Deep Cleaning Your House

Most people think keeping a clean house is simply about keeping up appearances. But in reality, it goes much deeper than this. Deep cleaning your house produces a number of benefits, including:

  • Eliminating viruses and bacteria. Cleaning your house helps eliminate the buildup of allergens, dust mites, pet dander, pollen, mold, and mildew that naturally accumulate over time. This keeps your house healthier for everyone.
  • Improving indoor air quality. If you suffer from allergies, it’s possible that your symptoms are the direct result of poor indoor air quality. By regularly cleaning your house, you can reduce the presence of allergens and, quite literally, breathe easier in your own home.
  • Reducing stress. We’re naturally hardwired to personify the environments we’re in. If we spend a lot of time in a space that’s messy and disorganized, our mental health will begin to deteriorate – possibly even leading to serious stress, depression, or anxiety. By deep cleaning your house, you take control over your environment and, by proxy, your mental health.

On top of all of this, keeping a clean home makes your house an inhospitable environment for pests, rodents, and other unwanted intruders. This makes it even easier to stay safe, clean, and healthy.

4 Tips for a Thorough Deep Clean

Keeping your house clean is obviously very important, but where do you start? Here are a few tips you might find helpful:

1. Go Room by Room

The easiest way to deep clean your house is to take a one-room-at-a-time approach. In other words, pick a room and focus all of your energy on cleaning it.

If you’re looking to make the biggest impact right away, we recommend choosing the kitchen, living room, master bedroom, master bathroom. (These are rooms that you use most frequently, and therefore will get the most satisfaction from cleaning.)

If you’re looking for an easy “win” to help you build momentum, a half bath, laundry room, guest bedroom, or closet is a good starting point.

2. Touch Every Item

A major part of deep cleaning is decluttering. (It’s hard to do the former without also doing the latter.) In fact, it makes sense to start by decluttering.

The best way to declutter is to begin in one corner of the room and touch every single item. As you pick up each item, sort it into one of three piles: sell/donate, trash, keep. For something to go into the keep pile, it should be something you’ve used in the past three months or plan on using in the next three months. (You can also keep it if it sparks joy – for example, a family picture on the wall.)

3. Go High to Low

With all of the junk out of the way, you can get to cleaning. The best approach is to go high to low. In other words, start by dusting all of the items at the top of the room and work your way down until you’re cleaning the floors.

m When it comes to cleaning floors, we recommend using a wet dry vacuum that allows you to clean a variety of surfaces and messes. This means you don’t have to switch between vacuum cleaners, mops, and brooms. Wet dry vacs make quick order of messes.

4. Refresh Your Scent

Maintaining a visually clean space is great, but don’t forget about that all-important fifth sense. We’re talking about smell, of course.

Finish your cleaning off by introducing pleasant aromas into your home. But rather than using candles or air sanitizing sprays (which are usually filled with chemicals), we recommend using essential oils or other natural ingredients. If you don’t have a diffuser for essential oils, you can always bring a pot to a simmer on the stove and add things like clove leaves or cinnamon sticks.

Adding it All Up

Trying to clean a house that hasn’t been deep cleaned in years can feel very intimidating. But the key is to start somewhere. That’s why we recommend the room-by-room approach. Choose the smallest room in the house and focus 100 percent of your energy on that room.

Once you complete this assignment, the momentum will carry you into the next room, and so on. Just start somewhere!
