Bag Vocabulary

Every chic woman should know how to name a certain bag she is searching for in a store, and also when she wishes to share with her friends and describe her latest acquisition. For this to happen, we wish to share with you a sketch that will help you memorize the types of bags that are most popular. Feel free to mention new ones if you believe they deserve to be among these following:

Backpack – A bag that is supported by the shoulders with double handles and lies across the back. Suitable for sportswear.

Baguette – A purse that is relatively long from side to side and small from top to bottom. Suitable for a casual everyday look.

Barrel – A bag that has a cylindrical shape and resembles to a barrel. Suitable for a casual look.

Bucket – A roomy bag shaped like a bucket, usually has an open top and shoulder strap. Suitable for casual but also sport wear.

Clutch – Small but long bag (rectangular), evening bag without a handle. If similar to a letter, it is also called envelope.

Doctor – A bag that is flat bottomed with rounded sides, slightly elongated with two large handles over a collapsible metal frame. Perfect for going to the office.

Duffel/Sea – A large bag, usually for travel or sports; in the past used mainly by sailors.

Flap – A bag that is featuring a folding flap closure. Perfect for a fluid summer dress.

Frame – A purse that is quite rigid, rectangular shaped, similar to a money purse.

Hobo – A large crescent-shaped shoulder bag or any large bag that hangs from your shoulder and has a main compartment closure. Suitable for everyday wearing.

Messenger – A bag with a long strap to be worn across the body that winds around the chest resting the bag on the lower back. When the strap is shorter, it becomes a sling bag.

Minaudiere – A small evening bag with a hard case that is often embezzled with semi precious stones or beads or covered with fabric or leather.

Quilted – A bag that features a top-stitched pattern similar to a quilt.

Saddle – Originally a bag hung over a saddle. Suitable for casual wear.

Satchel – A structured handbag with top closure, double top handles, locking hardware and a wide, flat bottom. May be large or small and is similar to vintage school bags.

Shopper – Rectangular, often in canvas, perfect for shopping, single handled.

Tote – A medium to large bag double handled with an open top and an open main compartiment. Sometimes sold as a reusable shopping bag, this bag can carry anything that is too large for a common handbag – also called a ‘Shopper’.

Wristlet – A clutch shaped bag that comes with an attached leather or bracelet-looking strap allowing you to hold your bag and dance freely.
